AbstractThis study explores the expectations, support needs, and preferences of 13 Indonesian high school students participating in an online English discussion program with Japanese peers (Smile Project). The program aims to improve English speaking skills through thematic conversations about self-introduction, local culture, and future aspirations. Questionnaire results reveal students’ optimism for language development, highlight key challenges, and inform targeted strategies to enhance the learning experience.
